Joining an event as a performer

How to use a performer sign-up link to claim your spot at an open mic, showcase, or competition.

For: Performers

When a venue runs an open mic, a singer-songwriter showcase, or a competition that lets performers self-register, they share a sign-up link. You visit that link, enter your name, and you're on the list — no phone tag with the organizer needed.

This article walks through the whole flow from the moment you get the link to the moment you see your name in the lineup.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • The sign-up link from the organizer (or the venue's social post, newsletter, etc.)
  • A NextSet account — free to create at nextset.ca/sign-up

If sign-up is open to the public, you can browse the page without an account. But you'll need to be signed in to actually claim a spot.

How to sign up

The link will look like one of these:

  • nextset.ca/<venue>/<event>/signup — the clean, shareable version
  • nextset.ca/event/<id>/signup — an older-style link that still works

Both take you to the same page. You'll see the event name, date, venue, and how long each set is.

Step 2 — Check that sign-up is open

Near the top of the form you'll see a green Signup Open badge or a red Signup Closed badge. If it's open, great — carry on. If it shows a future opening time, check back then.

You'll also see a slots bar showing how many spots are left and how many have been filled. If the event has a maximum number of performers, this tells you whether there's still room.

Step 3 — Read any requirements

If the organizer has listed requirements — genre, instrument, original material only, etc. — they appear in an amber box before the form. Read these before signing up so you're not surprised on the night.

Step 4 — Enter your performer name

Type the name you want to appear in the lineup. This can be your real name, your band or project name, or any stage name — whatever you want the audience and organizer to see.

There's also an optional Notes field. Use it to mention your genre, a special request ("need a 10-minute slot instead of 5"), or anything else the organizer should know.

Step 5 — Sign in and confirm

If you're not already signed in, the button reads Sign in to Sign Up — tap it, complete the quick login, and you'll land back on the sign-up page. NextSet remembers where you were.

Once you're signed in and your performer name is filled in, tap Sign Up Now. You'll see a green confirmation banner and your name will appear in the lineup panel on the right. That's it — you're on the list.

After you sign up

Once your name is in the lineup:

  • The organizer sees it immediately in their event dashboard.
  • The lineup panel on the sign-up page updates live, so you can share the link with friends and they'll see your name there too.
  • Your spot is held until the organizer builds the final rundown for the night.

Want to cancel? Return to the same sign-up link while you're signed in. A Cancel My Signup button appears in place of the form. Tap it and your spot is released.

On the night

The organizer controls the running order from their director controls. Performers are called in the order set in the rundown, which may differ from the sign-up order (for example, a competition draw randomizes the lineup). The projector display in the room shows who's on stage now and who is up next.

If you've been added to the event as an official performer — not just via self-signup — you may also have a backstage monitor link. Ask the organizer for that URL.

Common problems

The sign-up link shows "Signup Closed." Sign-up is turned on and off by the organizer per event — it's not automatic. If you expected it to be open, contact the venue or organizer directly and ask them to open it, or check whether they posted a different link.

There are no slots left ("All slots are currently filled"). The event has hit its maximum number of performers. Check back in case someone cancels, or reach out to the organizer to ask if they can expand the list.

I'm getting an error when I try to sign up. Make sure you've entered a performer name — the button stays disabled until the name field has something in it. If the error persists after that, try refreshing the page and signing in again.

The link doesn't open the sign-up page — it shows a 404. The URL may have been shared with a typo, or the event may have been removed. Ask the organizer for a fresh link from their event dashboard.

I signed up but my name isn't showing. Refresh the page. If it still isn't there after a refresh, try signing up again — the first attempt may not have gone through. If you see a "you're already signed up" error, then your name is in the system and the organizer will see it even if the display glitches.

I can't find the sign-up link. The organizer shares it — NextSet doesn't generate it automatically. Check the venue's social media, their website, or message them directly. You can also browse nextset.ca/events to find the event page and look for a sign-up link there.
