How guests join and participate

How to join a NextSet event on your phone, enter live polls and Q&A, and what to expect as a guest.

For: Event attendees

You don't need an account to join a live NextSet event. All you need is the join link or a QR code — and about ten seconds to enter your name.

How to get to the join page

Your host shares the join link or a QR code. You'll typically find one of these:

  • A QR code displayed on the venue's projector or screen
  • A short link printed in the event programme or posted at the entrance
  • A link texted or emailed to you before the event

The join URL looks like nextset.ca/event/<eventId>/join. Tap it or scan the code and it opens straight in your phone's browser — no app to download.

Joining the event

When the join page loads, you'll see a short form. Here's what each field is:

  1. Display name (required) — the name that appears on the projector and on your responses. Pick something clear so the host and other guests can see who's who.
  2. Role or team label (optional) — a short tag like "Bride Squad", "Team Parent", or "Coach". Not all events ask for this.
  3. Email or phone (optional) — some events collect contact details; others don't. You'll only see these fields if the organiser has switched them on.
  4. Selfie (optional) — some events let you attach a photo to your guest profile.

Once you've filled in your display name, tap Join Event. You'll see a confirmation screen and the live interaction area will appear immediately below it.

Participating in polls, Q&A, trivia, and word clouds

After you join, the interaction area shows whatever the director has currently switched on. There are four types you might see:

What you see What to do
Poll Tap the option you want and submit. Results appear on the projector within a few seconds.
Trivia Pick your answer and tap submit — the quicker you answer correctly, the more points you earn.
Q&A Type your question or comment and submit. The director decides which responses appear on screen. You can also upvote other guests' questions.
Word cloud Type a word or short phrase. All the responses combine into a shared word cloud on the projector.

If nothing is showing, the director hasn't launched an interaction yet — or the current one has closed. The page checks for new activity automatically, so just keep the tab open and something will appear when the director goes live.

What shows up on the projector

The big screen updates within a few seconds of the director launching or closing an interaction. Poll percentages, trivia leaderboards, approved Q&A responses, and word clouds all appear there in real time. You don't need to refresh to see them change.

Keeping your session active

Your guest profile is tied to your browser tab. As long as you stay on the join page (or keep that tab open), you'll receive each new prompt as the director switches between interactions. If you need to step away and come back, just navigate back to the same join link — your name and session will still be recognised.

Common problems

I tapped submit but nothing happened. You may not have finished the join step yet. Scroll back up on the join page and make sure you've entered a display name and tapped Join Event first. The interaction area only becomes active once you've joined.

The page went blank or I accidentally closed the tab. Your session is saved in your current browser tab. If you closed it, reopen the join link and enter your name again — joining a second time is quick and won't cause any issues.

The interaction area is empty even though the show has started. The director controls what's live. If you see a message like "Stand by for the next prompt", it means no interaction is currently active. Keep the tab open; a new one will appear automatically when the director launches it.

I submitted a Q&A response but it's not on screen. Q&A responses go through the director for moderation before they appear on the projector. Not every response will be shown — the director selects the ones that make it to the screen.

The join link says the event is at capacity. Each event has a guest cap set by the organiser. If that cap has been reached, new joins are blocked. Contact the person who gave you the link.
